Transition Information
We clearly recognise that a lot of children with ASD do have difficulties with many transitions each day. However the information on this page is relating to the big transitions that children make during their school lives. In a school for Children from 4-19 there are a number of school transitions that the children go through during their time at school.
The initial transition usually whan they join the school, often this will be at 4 years of age and with a number of other parents and children. However we also have alot of children who join us in different year groups and at different points in the year. We will always work with the parents and any previous educational settings to try and identify any difficulties that new pupils may have when starting, we will often try and offer opportunities to visit too. In accordance with our aim we do treat each pupil as an individual and plan accordingly.
There are then transitions at the end of each Key Stage, these are usually straight forward, and as long as all parties agree that the school continues to be the right school for the pupil concerned then they can remain in the school, however there are occasions where one or all parties do not feel that the school is appropriate any longer. In these cases discussions will take place at annual review and papers would be prepared for county panels.
For the transition into Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and the Transition into Post 16 we hold a parents evening in order that parents are able to be more aware of what changes there will be to our expectations and the curriculum on offer.
From year 9 onwards we invite the Transition Team to have input into the Annual Review, at which time a discussion is had about education at Post 16 and Post 19. As we offer education until 19 often the preferred option is for students to stay until 19, but again on some occasions one or all parties do not feel that the school is appropriate any longer.
