Reading in the primary school

Our chosen DfE approved phonics scheme is ‘Twinkl phonics’. Teachers deliver phonics activities as appropriate for the individual needs of each pupil and we recognise that some pupils may learn reading through a wide range of approaches. Attention Autism sessions are delivered three times a week with stage 1 focussing on developing phase 1 phonic skills. ‘Rhino Readers’ E-books are used to develop reading fluency linked to the pupils Twinkl phonics level. Families also have access to ‘phonics play’ which we also use in school.

We promote a love of reading by encouraging pupils to access a wide variety of texts, literature and media both in school and the wider community, for example visiting a local library to choose a book. Pupils have access to the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme and pupils are benchmarked regularly to ensure they have access to appropriate texts. 1:1 reading sessions take place daily to support pupils with developing reading and comprehension skills. Pupils are invited to take books home to share with their families.
